How to Choose a Batter's Leg Guard
Which Leg Does a Batter's Leg Guard Go On?
The guard goes on the lead leg, the one closer to the pitcher. A right-handed hitter wears it on the left leg. A left-handed hitter wears it on the right leg. Switch hitters need a guard that fits either leg, like a double ankle or no ankle model, or one guard for each side.
Sizing and Fit
Most of these guards come in one size for older players, and youth versions are sized smaller. The guard should sit flat on the shin and stay put when he strides and runs. Straps should be snug without digging in.
- Coverage: standard guards protect the shin and top of the foot. Extended guards go higher up the leg. Double ankle guards cover both sides of the ankle.
- Handedness: some youth guards are sold in right-handed and left-handed batter sizes. Check the listing before you order.
