Catcher's leg guards should cover from the top of the knee to the top of the foot without pinching when he squats. Measure from the middle of the kneecap to the ankle bend and use the exact model's chart to pick intermediate or adult. Then check that he can get into his stance, shift and block without the guards sliding to the side. These are catcher's leg guards, not the batter's shin guards hitters wear at the plate.

Adult catcher's leg guards

For a high school catcher in adult sizes, start with the EvoShield Pro-SRZ 2.0 Adult. Its lower guards use Gel-to-Shell Technology that molds to the ankles and shins, and the upper guards adjust up to 2 inches in length. The Rawlings Mach is the other adult option, with adjustable pad placement and quick-attach buckles.

Knee blocks for long weekends

Knee blocks, sometimes called knee savers, attach behind the knee and give him something to sit back on in the crouch. Many catchers like them for doubleheaders and tournament weekends.

Fit and care

Don't size up so he can grow into them. Oversized guards slide and leave gaps at the knee. Use the maker's chart (EvoShield's sizing page shows how to measure). After games, let them air out and check the straps and buckles before the next one.
