The best softball bat starts with two questions: does she play fastpitch or slowpitch, and which stamp does the league require? Fastpitch bats are light, with drops around -8 to -12 and a 2¼-inch barrel. Slowpitch bats are heavier, built for adults hitting a lofted pitch, and certified by groups like USA Softball and USSSA. Get those two right and then pick by length, weight and budget.

Kryo 2 and Ghost OG are two-piece bats. Vizion is one-piece. One-piece versus two-piece feel comes down to personal preference, so try both if you can. Aura is the -12 option, the place to start for a younger or smaller hitter who can't control a heavier bat yet.

Slowpitch softball bats

For adult rec and league slowpitch, the stamp comes first. The Stealth carries both USA Softball and USSSA approvals, which helps if you play in more than one league. The Mercy is a USA Softball bat. El Mero Mero is a balanced USSSA bat.

How to size a softball bat

Drop is length minus weight: a 32-inch, 22-ounce bat is a -10. For fastpitch, start with a height and weight chart, then have her hold the bat straight out to the side for a few seconds. If the barrel dips right away, it's too heavy. A bat she can swing on time beats a heavier bat she's late with. For slowpitch, weight and load matter more than drop. End-loaded bats put more mass toward the barrel, and balanced bats are easier to control.

Check the stamp every season

Associations update their approved and non-approved lists. Before you buy, check the current list for your league's governing body and the exact model and year on the bat.
