The right USA bat depends more on your kid's age, height, and strength than on the price tag. A 7-year-old and a 12-year-old both swing USA bats, but they should not be swinging the same one. This guide sorts the best USA Baseball bats by age, with the drop and length that usually fit each group. Last updated October 2026.
USA bat sizing by age
Louisville Slugger's sizing guide gives a good starting point. Use it as a starting point, then check it against your kid. If he can't hold the bat straight out to the side for about 10 seconds, it is too heavy.
- Ages 5-7: 24 to 26 inches, -11 or lighter.
- Ages 8-9: 26 to 28 inches, -11.
- Age 10: 28 to 29 inches, -11 or -10.
- Ages 11-12: 30 to 31 inches, -10 for most, -8 for a strong hitter.
- Ages 12-13: -8, moving to -5 as he gets ready for BBCOR.
USA bats max out at a 2 5/8 inch barrel. Little League, Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth, PONY, Dixie, and AABC all use the USA Baseball standard, so look for the USABat stamp. If you play travel ball, check whether your league uses USSSA instead. Our Little League bat guide covers league rules in more detail.

Ages 7-9: start light
At this age, bat speed and contact matter more than anything. Get a -11 that he can control. A one-piece alloy is fine and won't break the bank, and he will likely outgrow it in a season or two.
Louisville Slugger Dynasty USA (-11)
An affordable starter bat for kids just moving off tee ball. Light, simple, and easy to replace when he grows.
A one-piece alloy baseball bat with a balanced swing weight. Specs include lengths from 26-31 in, 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter, and drop options -11. Certified for USA Baseball (USA Bat) play.
DeMarini Uprising USA (-11)
Another budget -11. A good pick if you want a second bat in the bag or a starter for a younger sibling.
A one-piece alloy baseball bat with a balanced swing weight. Specs include lengths from 26-31 in, 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter, and drop options -11. Certified for USA Baseball (USA Bat) play.
Ages 9-11: the main event
This is where most families spend real money, because the bat will see a lot of at-bats in rec, all-stars, and some travel ball. Look for a -11 or -10 in the 28 to 30 inch range.
Easton Hype Fire USA (-11)
A two-piece composite with a light swing. The composite barrel needs some break-in, but it is a popular choice for kids who want a bigger feel without the weight. It also comes in -10, -8, and -5.

The 2027 Easton Hype Fire USA is a two-piece, all-composite USA Baseball bat with a balanced, low-MOI swing and a 2 5/8-inch barrel. The 3D Ropecell Composite barrel wraps 360 degrees to expand the sweet spot, and the ConneXion Max elastomer connector joins barrel and handle to cut hand sting. It also has an Opti-Flex handle, a Power Boost Soft Knob for bottom-hand leverage and a Flow-Tack grip. Available in -11, -10, -8 and -5 drops, lengths 27-32 in, in the Thermal Fade colorway. Easton backs it with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty.
Louisville Slugger Atlas 2.0 USA (-11)
A one-piece alloy with a balanced swing. No break-in, stiff feel, and good in cold spring games.

The 2027 Louisville Slugger Atlas 2.0 USA is a one-piece, all-alloy USA Baseball bat with a balanced swing weight and a 2 5/8-inch barrel. The thin-walled SL Hyper Alloy barrel swings light, the SPD-Gen2 End Cap boosts barrel performance, and Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) technology absorbs vibration on mishits. It also has an LS Pro Comfort Grip with a flared Pro Design Knob Taper. Available in -11 and -5 drops, lengths 26-32 in. Approved for AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, Little League and Pony play, with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty.
Louisville Slugger Omaha USA (-10)
Louisville Slugger lists it as one-piece alloy and balanced. A solid mid-price bat for a hitter who is ready for -10.
A one-piece alloy baseball bat with a balanced swing weight. Specs include lengths from 26-32 in, 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter, and drop options -10. Certified for USA Baseball (USA Bat) play.
DeMarini Exile USA (-11)
A mid-priced option from DeMarini if your kid likes their feel.

The 2027 DeMarini Exile USA is a one-piece, all-alloy USA Baseball bat with a balanced swing feel and a 2 5/8-inch barrel. It uses DeMarini's X14 Alloy barrel, a lightweight composite Tracer End Cap to help bat speed, an Integrated Handle Taper under the grip, and a softer Damplify Knob that reduces sting on mishits. Available in -11 and -5 drops, lengths 26-32 in. Approved for AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, Little League, Pony and NABF play, with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty.
Ages 11-13: stronger hitters
Once a kid is 5 feet tall and squaring the ball up, a -10 or -8 gives more mass behind the barrel. Don't rush it. Moving to a heavier drop too early hurts bat speed more than it adds power.
Louisville Slugger Supra USA (-10)

The 2027 Louisville Slugger Supra USA is a three-piece, all-composite USA Baseball bat with a balanced swing feel, a -10 drop and a 2 5/8-inch barrel. The EKO Composite barrel pairs a light swing with a large, optimized sweet spot, the VCX3 Vibration Control Connection System keeps it comfortable, and the GT1 End Cap improves barrel control. It also has a premium LS Pro Comfort Grip. Approved for AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, Little League, Pony and NABF play. Sizes 27-31 in, Yellow, Pink and Teal colorway, 12-month manufacturer's warranty.
Rawlings Icon USA (-8)
A two-piece composite for an older hitter getting ready for heavier bats. Our Icon vs Hype Fire comparison breaks down the feel difference.
A two-piece composite baseball bat with a balanced swing weight. Specs include lengths from 27-32 in, 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter, and drop options -12, -10, -8, -5. Certified for USA Baseball (USA Bat) play.
Louisville Slugger Select PWR USA (-8)
A two-piece with more weight toward the end, for the strong kid who already drives the ball. See end-loaded vs balanced bats before going this route.
A three-piece alloy-composite hybrid baseball bat with a balanced swing weight. Specs include lengths from 27-32 in, 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter, and drop options -10, -8, -5. Certified for USA Baseball (USA Bat) play.
DeMarini The Goods USA (-10)
A two-piece alloy-composite hybrid baseball bat with an end-loaded swing weight. Specs include lengths from 28-31 in, 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter, and drop options -10. Certified for USA Baseball (USA Bat) play.
How to tell if a bat is the right size
- Stand the bat next to him. The knob should reach about the middle of his palm when his arm hangs at his side.
- Have him hold it straight out with one hand. If it drops in under 10 seconds, it is too heavy.
- Watch a few swings. If the barrel dips or his hands drag, go lighter.
How we picked: we grouped current USA bats by drop and length range, used specs from manufacturer pages and sizing from Louisville Slugger's guide, and only listed bats that JustBats shows in stock. We did not hit with these bats.

FAQ
What size USA bat for a 10 year old?
Usually 28 or 29 inches in a -11 or -10. Check height and strength, not just age.
What drop should a 12 year old use?
Most 12-year-olds do well with -10. A bigger, stronger kid can handle -8.
Can a USA bat be used in USSSA?
Only if the league allows it. USSSA tournaments require the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp, so check your league rules first.
Is a more expensive USA bat better for young kids?
Not always. At 7 to 9, a light -11 that he can control matters more than a premium composite.
